Hi, friends! Check out today’s Artist Spotlight interview with Kimberly Hunley, co-founder of Black Quill Studio! Kimberly and her sister Melissa both own the modernized vintage art shop and feature their art pieces at Black Quill Studio. Good Life Detroit’s “Artist Spotlight” will feature an interview with a Detroit or Metro Detroit-based artist, highlighting his/her art. If you are a local artist and would like to feature your art on the blog, contact Jennifer for more details! (This blog post is sponsored by Black Quill Studio. Recently I had the pleasure of chatting with Metro Detroit-based artist Kimberly Hunley. Kimberly and her sister Melissa own Black Quill Studio, a modern vintage art shop which features modernized vintage and art deco styles created by the sisters. “We are a modern vintage printed art shop for industrial or urban chic homes,” Kimberly says.

Before opening Black Quill Studio, the sisters owned an online art store through Etsy. “Our Etsy shop was modest and was a great learning opportunity as we searched for a more permanent concept,” says Kimberly. “After a year with our fledgling shop, Black Quill was realized and created.”

The sisters are inseparable; Kimberly says they are never far apart. “We have always spent hours drawing and creating.” The last few years, Kimberly and Melissa have focused on finishing their college studies, learning more about business, and creating art through graphic design and art.

Edgy, Vintage Chic Style

Kimberly and Melissa use a stylized-technical pen and quill pen to create their vintage art. “Both pen types create a beautiful edgy vintage chic style that enhances the beauty and appeal of urban Detroit art.”

In fact, Black Quill Studio features many art pieces which reflect Detroit culture. From the famous Fisher Building chandelier to the historic Ford Model T, customers can find an array of Detroit and Michigan themed art.

“Our core designs will evolve to include many more Michigan designs, as well as continue having other vintage designs. The new designs of Michigan Mitten, Detroit, Fisher Building Chandelier, and Michigan are just the beginning of a long line of locally themed art.”
