Buddy’s Pizza is Having a Veterans Day Social Media Contest

Community News and Social Media Contest for Veterans Day

Buddy’s Pizza is one of my favorite places to get pizza in Metro Detroit. In fact, when we first moved to the metro area, Buddy’s was the first pizza restaurant we visited! (You can see pictures below from our first visit to Buddy’s!) We went to the pizzeria to celebrate our big move to Michigan, and we loved our experience at the restaurant. The food is SO good!

Aside from Buddy’s Pizza having really good food, the restaurant also does community work in Metro Detroit. Last month, Buddy’s Pizza established a charitable partnership with Buddy-to-Buddy, a local veteran-to-veteran support organization.

Together both organizations raised $1500 to support Buddy-to-Buddy’s life-changing programs for service men and women returning to civilian life.

Here are a few photos from our first visit to Buddy’s Pizza in 2015.

A Little About Buddy-to-Buddy Veterans Program

Centered on a peer-to-peer concept, Buddy-to-Buddy trains volunteer veterans to provide peer support and linkage to resources for Michigan service members and veterans. Volunteer veterans help other vets and active military address issues ranging from accessing financial, employment, legal, benefit, or educational resources to identifying mental health providers for emotional, substance abuse, or relationship concerns.

“We’re very pleased to welcome Buddy’s Pizza to the Ann Arbor community and are grateful for the support and awareness we’re able to create with initiatives and partnerships like this,” said Kate Melcher, Buddy-to-Buddy Program Manager.

“Buddy-to-Buddy trains veterans to reach out to any Michigan service member or veteran in need and connect them to critical resources. We are proud to do this work, and honored when a company like Buddy’s Pizza joins us in serving those who served our country.”

Buddy’s initiated the partnership in correlation with the grand opening of its new Ann Arbor location Friday, October 13, 2017. Throughout the day, $2 from the purchase of any pizza at the Ann Arbor location benefited the nonprofit. Nearly 750 pizzas were sold, resulting in a hefty donation for the nonprofit.

“We’re so thankful for the overwhelming response we received from the public during the Ann Arbor location’s opening day,” said Wes Pikula, Buddy’s Pizza vice president of operations.

“Buddy-to-Buddy does a tremendous job providing veterans with resources and thanks to the generosity of our patrons, we’re able to provide a substantial donation to support those who’ve given so much of themselves to protect our nation.”

Transitioning to Civilian Life is Challenging

As an Army veteran wife, I can tell you first hand returning to civilian life is very challenging. When a serviceman or woman separates from the military, it is not like leaving a job and starting a new one. Military life is so different from civilian life. For my family, it was hard for us to transition to civilian life. Even though it has been two years since Travis was in the Army, we are still transitioning from military life.

Travis served 8.5 years in the Army so for almost a decade, Army life was all he knew. Plus, two weeks after his contract with the Army ended, we moved to Michigan. That was two very big life changes for our family.

Supporting servicemen and women and their families, including veterans, will always be a great passion of mine. It really makes me happy to hear when businesses like Buddy’s Pizza support military veterans.
