Eleven Top Picks for the Detroit Month of Design Festival

September is another big month of festivities in Detroit. This month marks the celebration of design aka the Detroit Month of Design Festival, and we’ve got a list of eleven events you may really love!

The Detroit Month of Design Festival is a city-wide celebration of art, creativity, and design. Throughout the month of September, various events and workshops are held in Detroit and the metro area.

Favorite events such as the Eastern Market After Dark, Youth Day, and Light Up Livernois celebrate art and design through interactive fun. The festival also hosts a series of workshops for adults and youth to learn more about design and how to grow their creative skills.

Each event and workshop is unique and a wonderful way for you to learn more about creativity and design. Make sure you check out the full list of events so you can find an event you might be interested in attending.

Here are a few events you may like:

Shape: Designing Furniture in Michigan’s Design Legacy

Happening: The special furniture exhibition opens tonight at 7 p.m. and will remain open until September 30th. 

Details: Explore themes of Michigan design, past and present through a carefully curated selection of original, mid-century masterpieces and contemporary studio furniture. 

You’ll get the chance to see design practices from iconic designers like Charles & Ray Eames and Florence Knoll. The exhibit will be featured at the Shinola Detroit Store in Detroit. Get all of the details here!

Drinks X Design: Design Crawl

Happening: September 13th 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Fisher Building in Detroit

Details: This hip event celebrates art and design at Detroit’s largest art object the Fisher Building. A fun mix of events are scheduled for Drinks X Design: Design Crawl such as:

Park(ing) Day – an annual event which honors the community by transforming parking spaces into temporary parklets

Meet & Greet Detroit Creatives – On the 4th floor of the Fisher Building, is a creative space where a few fantastic Detroit artists have their art studios. During the event, you’ll get to tour the studios and view their work!

Tour the Offices of Albert Kahn & Associates – The event will wrap-up on the 18th floor at the offices of Albert Kahn & Associates.

The Rude Boyz

Happening: Opening Night will be Saturday, September 8th at 7 p.m. at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History

Details: This event is part of the Penny Stamps Speaker Series. It features the art of Osborne Macharia, an award-winning Afrofuturist artist and photographer, and the music of Blinky Bill. Macharia’s art conveys a series of important messages about topics such as care for the elderly, gender abuse, and inclusion.

Blinky Bill Sellanga is a Nairobi-based singer-songwriter, beat maker, producer, and one fourth of Kenyan art and music collective Just a Band.

PICNIC

Happening: September 22nd from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Simone DeSousa Edition in Detroit

Details: The PICNIC project is a series of mobile furniture armatures that assemble into a cohesive architectural space spanning the gallery and courtyard. The project will aim to blur the lines between object, architecture, and the field in between. Get more details about the PICNIC exhibit here.

Furniture of Information with Rumman Chowdhury

Happening: September 26th at 12:30 p.m. 

Details: Come and listen to Data Scientist Dr. Rumman Chowdhury share the social implications of AI built on biased information, as well as her ideas on how communities can be a part of developing and using AI to improve the equity and mobility for all.

Road to 150: French Paper Tour

Happening: September 8th at 6 p.m. at the College of Creative Studies

Details: Road to 150 will showcase some of the highest quality work in print and paper. The event costs $10 and you can get all of the details here.

Youth Day

Happening: September 15th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Michigan Science Center in Detroit

Details: Youth Day is a fun celebration of art and design for children and young adults. Last year, I took my kids to the event and they had SO much fun! 

There will be a variety of design-focused workshops for ages 2 to 16. The first 600 tickets to the event are free so make sure you reserve your spot now! Get all of the details here.

15 Seconds Festival

Happening: September 20 – 21 at the Cobo Center

Details: The 15 Seconds Festival is a 2-day experience designed to help businesses grow. The festival is known as Europe’s leading interdisciplinary business festival, and it aims to unite a global community of curious minds.

Eastern Market After Dark

Happening: September 20th from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. at Eastern Market

Details: One of the most anticipated Eastern Market events of the year, the After Dark event is one you don’t want to miss! On September 20th, Eastern Market will transform into a creative district to feature more than 30 art galleries and studios.

“Detroit: Crossroad of Innovation” Fresco Unveiling

Happening: September 23rd from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Cobo Center

Details: Hosted by the Detroit Regional Convention Facility Authority Art Foundation, the public is invited to the unveiling of the “Detroit: Crossroad of Innovation” fresco painting at the Cobo Center.

The artist of the painting will give a speech and then there will be fun activities for guests to enjoy. You can get all of the details about the event here.

Light Up Livernois 2018

Happening: September 29th from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Details: Light Up Livernois 2018 is an exciting event Design Core Detroit hosts annually during the Detroit Month of Design. The event celebrates creativity and design on the historic Avenue of Fashion.

Detroit-based artists, creators, and designers collaborate with local small businesses to shop, dine, and explore the various ways design surrounds us in our everyday lives. At this event, you’ll get to experience design through open studios, fashion vignettes, musical performances, and small business highlights.
