Hi, friends! Hope you had a fun and safe Halloween yesterday. Travis and I took our kids out trick or treating and then afterward we watched Hocus Pocus while eating some yummy pizza from Randazzo. Trick or treating has been one of our favorite family Halloween traditions. The kids look forward to it every year, even my two teenagers.
Speaking of beloved family Halloween traditions, the Neonatal Intesive Care Unite (NICU) at Hutzel Women’s Hospital started a new Halloween tradition for the sweet newborns and their parents. The Hutzel Women’s Hospital team dressed up the babies in the cutest felt Halloween costumes! When I saw the pictures, I couldn’t help but smile and cry a little because it just warmed my heart so much. (All tears of joy!)
The costumes for the babies were a Peanut Butter and Jelly costume for a set of twins, Superman, Batman, Mermaids, and a Butterfly costume.
When I gave birth to Zephaniah, my fifth baby, in August 2017, he had to go to the NICU for health concerns. Although his time was very short in the NICU, it was still a very emotional and hard time for Travis, myself, and our children. So I understand a little bit how stressful it can be to have your baby in the NICU.
For the staff at Hutzel Women’s Hospital to do something so kind as to give the newborns Halloween costumes…well, I know it makes all the difference in the world to the babies’ parents!
Megan Maiani, Manager of Patient Services NICU and Special Care Nursery, said she wanted the parents to have a memory of their babies first Halloween. “The hospital is on a baby-friendly journey where they are really focusing on family-centered care for the babies,” said Maiani.
“We are focusing on a large amount of bonding with mothers, fathers, and siblings so by doing something like babies first Halloween we can help to bring more family-centered care to the families that have the babies in the NICU because it’s something that they can keep as a memory.”
Aren’t the babies Halloween costumes so cute?! I love them! Keeping the newborns and their parents in our thoughts and prayers as the babies are growing stronger each day!
