Happy Friday! Hope you had a lovely Valentine’s Day. We celebrated Valentine’s Day at home. Travis and the kids baked a homemade chocolate cake and we ordered pizza for dinner.

What are your weekend plans? Travis and I are having our Valentine’s date this weekend and we plan on going to an art show. I discovered about five art exhibits that are happening this weekend so it’s going to be hard to choose just one!

Here are five highlights from the week for today’s #FridayVibes:

1. Art Exhibition Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

2. ANNOUNCED! NAACP Image Award Nominees

3. Discovering an Aretha Mural I Love

4. Samuel L. Jackson’s Thoughts on a Revolutionary Marriage

5. Nordstrom Winter Sale

1. ART EXHIBITION: 50 YEARS OF IMMORTALITY

The Detroit Public Library (DPL) is hosting an art exhibition honoring the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Art is by Ana Candioti and it will be on display throughout the month of February in the DPL Galleria. See DPL’s official Facebook event page for more information.

2. ANNOUNCED! NAACP IMAGE AWARD NOMINEES

On Wednesday, the nominees for the 50th NAACP Image Awards were announced. It’s a multicultural award show that celebrates the accomplishments of people of color in television, music, literature, and film. The NAACP Image Awards also honors individuals or groups who promote social justice through creative work. You can view the complete listing of nominees here.

I snapped this photograph of Desiree Kelly’s Aretha mural.

3. WHY DID IT TAKE ME SO LONG TO FIND THE ARETHA MURAL BY DESIREE KELLY?

I had been looking for Kelly’s artwork of Aretha Franklin since Murals in the Market 2018, but I couldn’t find it. I know. I know. There’s a map of the murals so I should have used that. You’re right. I definitely should have because I would have found the mural much sooner.

Nevertheless, I finally found it last week and I am so glad I did! Before finding the mural, I had seen pictures of it on Instagram. To see it in person, though, just doesn’t compare. Kelly’s mural is beautiful! I love it so much!

You guys already know how much I love Aretha Franklin so I was very excited to find Désirée Kelly’s Aretha mural! If you haven’t seen it yet, it’s on Russel St. in Eastern Market on the side of the building where Zeff’s restaurant is located.

4. BEACON OF LOVE: SAMUEL L. JACKSON + LATANYA JACKSON

In an interview with Essence magazine, actor Samuel L. Jackson was asked his thoughts on how he feels knowing that many people look up to him and his wife actress LaTanya Jackson as “a beacon of Black love”.

“People that struggle together need to succeed together,” Jackson said to Essence. “It’s just the way it is. I’m in a revolutionary family. That’s who we were. We always wanted to be that– a unified, revolutionary family.”

I think the Jackson’s love for one another and commitment to family and marriage is inspirational for everyone!
