Signs Everywhere I: 4/10/17
Details: “It’s a sign!” or as Bill Engvall says in his famous comedy album, “Here’s your sign.”
There are signs everywhere. Literally.
I’m not just talking about the coincidences of life or the moments in life which make you think, “it’s a sign! It’s fate!” I’m talking about physical signs you see with your very own eyes. Signs intentionally displayed for all to see or signs people accidentally leave behind. Yes, even those signs people stick on buildings and street signs (like a stop sign) to just be silly.
Every time I’m out in Detroit, Metro Detroit…wherever…I see all kinds of signs. Artsy signs, business signs, poster signs, and sticker signs. Signs in neon lights, signs painted on walls (better known as murals), signs sticking on cars (or bumper stickers). It’s a nonverbal means of communication intended to get our attention and make us aware.
But aware of what?
Slow down the traffic light is about to turn red. American Coney Island serves beer. All sinners are welcome. Buy One Get One Free! Hurry sale ends tomorrow! Get rich quick schemes. Work from home. Parking $15. Church picnic Friday at 2 p.m. Make your vote count!
Signs are everywhere, wouldn’t you agree? And each sign has a message.
Sometimes we don’t like the message on the sign. Sometimes the message makes us laugh. Other times the message makes us stop and think.
Lately, I’ve been photographing signs that stand out to me. I’ve always been intrigued by mural art and street art. It amazes me how artists can design and paint these elaborate images on buildings. When I view the murals, I know it’s not just a cool picture. There’s also a message behind it. Just like the signs we see around town.
I started taking pictures of the different signs I found around the city. I thought I’d start documenting it on my blog. I’m calling it “Signs Everywhere”. Here’s the very first post to kick off the series.
