In joy or sadness flowers are our constant friends.

Friday’s city adventure was in the West Village of Detroit. My children and I took a field trip to West Village to visit Detroit’s famous flower truck Pot & Box. It was really chilly outside. It had rained earlier in the day and the sunshine only peeked out of the clouds a few times.

But what a wonderful way to bring light to a cold, dreary day by visiting the flower truck Pot & Box in Detroit!

My children enjoyed getting out in the city and picking out a plant to take home. We really liked the concept of flowers on a truck.

My three-year-old daughter Zhen was so excited to see flowers in a truck that when we got home, she could not stop talking about “the flower truck.” She held on dearly to her hen-and-chicks succulent and refused to let it go until we arrived home.

But once home, she still wanted to hold her plant. When Daddy came home from work, she excitedly showed him her hen-and-chicks succulent. “Look, Daddy! I got a flower from the flower truck,” she happily told my husband. She even gave her succulent a name: “Zhen.” Naming her succulent after herself, she told me, “We’re both Zhen!”

My teenage children also enjoyed visiting the Pot & Box flower truck. My son (16) picked out a cabbage succulent, while my daughter (14) selected a mini succulent. I even bought a mini succulent for my 10 month-old-son Zechariah.

After purchasing the children’s plants, we headed across the street to the Red Hook, a cafe located in West Village which opened in Fall 2014.

We really enjoyed viewing the flowers and plants and learning about them. It was an enriching homeschool field trip for my crew, as we will begin our May garden project soon.

The Pot & Box team are very friendly and knowledgeable about the various plants. It warmed my heart to see the smiles on my children’s faces as they viewed and selected their favorite plant.  I was also happy to learn from the team, new plants are featured each week. I’m really looking forward to selecting more flowers for our home.

  1. The Pot & Box sounds like a great way to take plants to the masses. Glad you and the kids had an enjoyable field trip! Happy gardening!!!

    1. Thanks, Deasree! I like exploring the city. I think Zhen loves it a little more than the teens because she’s always asking me, “Are we going to the city today?!” 🙂
