Jennifer Good Life Detroit Blogger

Welcome to Good Life Detroit!

Hi, I’m Jennifer! I am a Metro Detroit-based street photographer. I enjoy capturing Detroit city life through my street photography. I also write blog posts about life in Detroit and my family’s experience moving to and settling in the greater Detroit area.

Tennessean living in Detroit!

I’m originally from a small Army city in Middle Tennessee. Living in a large city like Detroit is a new experience for me! In March 2015, my husband Travis and I, along with our four children, relocated to the greater Detroit area. Travis served 8.5 years active duty in the U.S. Army. In 2015, he medically separated from the Army because of a combat-related injury he sustained while on deployment in Iraq.

Prior to leaving the service, Travis was offered a job in Detroit. Once his contract ended, we packed up our things and moved to the Motor City. At the time, I was 8 months pregnant with our fourth baby. It was a little challenging moving while pregnant, but we did it! And now we’re here and we love our new life and our new home!

Why Good Life Detroit?

Well, for one, I love Detroit! And second, I wanted to show people all the good things about Detroit. Yes, the city is overcoming challenges, but that doesn’t mean you can’t live a good life in Detroit.

Originally, my blog was called “The Good Life”. I wanted my blog name to reflect Detroit and show a more positive side to the city. So I dropped “The” and added “Detroit” to the end: Good Life Detroit. I wanted “Good Life” to be synonymous to Detroit to show others there is good in Detroit.

What do you love about Detroit?

  1. I find the city’s diverse culture and rich history very intriguing.
  2. I love the art scene here. It really inspires me as a creative.
  3. I most especially LOVE the mural art!
  4. Detroit pride is very catching! Detroiters are proud of their city!
  5. The food. Um, hello?! Detroit food is delicious!
  6. There’s always something to do here. From festivals, cultural events, to exploring the nature parks, we never run out of things to do. I seriously do not know how anyone can live here and say they’re bored.
  7. And I love…you know what? You’d be here scrolling forever if I listed all of the reasons why I love Detroit. That’s why I started this blog and photography journey. To show you all of the things I love about Detroit! 🙂

Oh, but you live in Metro Detroit.

True. I live in Metro Detroit in the Tri-county area. We’re about 30 minutes outside of Detroit city limits.  I know some say Metro Detroit is not Detroit. Other people believe the metro area is part of Detroit. I can see both sides. Personally, I say I live in Metro Detroit if a Michigander asks where do I live. But to someone who is not from Michigan, I say I live in Detroit. If I try to break it all down, it can just get confusing, ya know?

Why do you love exploring Detroit and street photography so much?

I first started exploring the Detroit and the metro area to learn my way around and to learn more about our new home. I loved everything I was experiencing that I had to document it somehow. So I purchased my first DSLR camera and started photographing the city life and my family’s experiences.

After a few months of exploring the city, I soon realized I really loved street photography. So I started reading books and watching videos about street photography. I also joined photography workshops and photo walks in Detroit to help me with my photography. I’m still learning, but I am enjoying my photography journey so far. I’ve been doing street photography for a year now and I am excited to continuing growing as a photographer!

Why do you prefer color photographs over black and white photographs for street photography?

I know typically street photography is featured in black and white. I love black and white photography. I have discovered many amazing street photographers who have beautiful work in black and white. I tried it and I just don’t think it’s my style. I am attracted to color, especially in the city. I love the lights and beautiful murals in Detroit. I feel like if I converted my photographs to black and white, then you couldn’t see the beautiful colors in the city art or the life of the city. In my opinion, the colors in my photographs bring the city to life.

Do you sell your photographs?

At this time, I am not selling my photographs. But it is something I am definitely interested in doing in the near future. When the option to purchase my photography becomes available, I will update my website and post an announcement on my social media accounts. If you are interested in one of my photographs, contact me and we can discuss it. 🙂

Let’s Connect!

You can also find me on Instagram and Twitter (@goodlifedetroit for both accounts). I love Instagram. (My 14 year old daughter calls me mamarazzi because I am always taking pictures.) I like to share my photographs on my IG and connect with other Michiganders and photographers. But you don’t have to be from Michigan or a photographer to be my IG friend. 🙂 I love connecting with everyone. So if you are on IG, look me up!

Thank you for visiting Good Life Detroit. I  hope by photographing and writing about my life experiences living in Detroit/Metro Detroit, I can show people the many positive aspects of Detroit.
