Welcome to Good Life Detroit!
Hi! My name is Jennifer and I am the lifestyle blogger and photographer behind the name “Good Life Detroit” (@goodlifedetroit on Facebook Instagram, and Twitter).
I write blog posts about life in Detroit and in the metro area. I am also a self-taught photographer. I enjoy photographing city life and street photography, particularly in the city of Detroit.
When I first created Good Life Detroit, it was called “The Good Life”. I focused on writing about family life and our big move to Metro Detroit. Once I started exploring the city, I decided to shift the focus of my blog to be about life in Detroit and the surrounding cities. I enjoy going to the events in the city and hearing positive community stories. I decided to start sharing my experiences on my blog, which led to the blog’s name change from “The Good Life” to “Good Life Detroit”.
Now Good Life Detroit features blog stories about city events, festivals, business/product reviews, and positive community stories. I also like to feature my photography on the blog.
Tennessean Living in Detroit
I am originally from a small Army city in Middle Tennessee. The city I used to live in was not as large as the greater Detroit area. Living in a large city like Detroit is a new experience for me, but it is an experience I greatly welcome.
In March 2015, my husband Travis and I, along with our four children, relocated to the greater Detroit area. Travis served 8.5 years active duty in the U.S. Army. In 2015, he medically separated from the Army because of a combat-related injury he sustained while on deployment in Iraq.
Prior to leaving the service, Travis was offered a job in Metro Detroit. Once his Army contract ended, we packed up our things and moved to the Motor City!
What do you love about Detroit?
- I find the city’s diverse culture and rich history very intriguing.
- I love the art scene here. It really inspires me as a creative.
- I most especially LOVE the mural art!
- Detroit pride is very catching! Detroiters are proud of their city!
- The food. Um, hello?! Detroit food is delicious!
- There’s always something to do here. From festivals, cultural events, to exploring the nature parks, we never run out of things to do. I seriously do not know how anyone can live here and say they’re bored.
- And I love…you know what? You’d be here scrolling forever if I listed all of the reasons why I love Detroit. That’s why I started this blog and photography journey. To show you all of the things I love about Detroit! 🙂
Why do you love exploring Detroit?
I first started exploring the Detroit and Metro area to find my way around and to learn more about our new home. I loved everything I was experiencing that I had to document it somehow. In August 2015, I purchased my first Nikon DSLR camera and started photographing the city life and my family’s experiences. A year later, I decided to start blogging about it.
Why do you love street photography so much?
After a few months of exploring the city, I soon realized I really loved street photography. I love street photography because I like capturing candid moments. I also enjoy photographing the city scenery.
I started reading books and watching videos about street photography. I also joined photography workshops and photo walks in Detroit to help me with my photography. I’m still learning, but I am enjoying my photography journey so far. I’ve been doing street photography for a year now and I am excited to continue growing as a photographer!
Why do you prefer color photographs over black and white photographs for street photography?
I am attracted to color, especially in the city. I love the lights and beautiful murals in Detroit. I feel like if I converted my photographs to black and white, then you couldn’t see the beautiful colors in the city art or the life of the city. In my opinion, the colors in my photographs bring the city to life.
Can you attend my event and feature it on Good Life Detroit?
My family and I love attending events in Detroit and the metro area. If you have an event you would like to feature on the blog, please contact me. I’d love to learn more about your event and see if it will be a good fit for Good Life Detroit and its readers.
You can also find me on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter (@goodlifedetroit for all three accounts).
I love Instagram. (My 14-year-old daughter calls me Mamarazzi because I am always taking pictures.) I like to share my photographs on my IG and connect with other Michiganders and photographers. But you don’t have to be from Michigan or a photographer to be my IG friend. 🙂 I love connecting with everyone so if you are on IG, look me up!
Thank you for visiting Good Life Detroit!
