Looking for a fun event or two to attend this weekend? We did a little research and found there is a lot going on this weekend in Detroit and the metro area. Here are nine events we found scheduled for this weekend (June 3 -4, 2017). It’s going to be hard to choose just one! Have a good weekend, friends!
ART on the GRAND | June 3 -4 | FREE | Historic Downtown Farmington, MI
This is ART on the GRAND’s eighth year hosting their fine art fair in the Historic Downtown Farmington. Artists from around the country will be featured at this event, including Rua Francis (see our previous interview with Rua). Expect to see an array of artistic styles such as glass art, jewelry, leather art, mixed media, painting, photography, pottery, wearable art, wood art, and more!
ART on the GRAND is FREE and will also include a kids art alley. The kids’ art alley will feature a youth artist market, DIY upcycled art tent, and a community mural. Many other kid-friendly activities will also be available at the art fair.

Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix presented by Lear | June 2 – 4 | starting at $45 (see Detroit GP for details) | The Raceway at Belle Isle Park Street Circuit
Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix is back! The event is presented by Lear and will feature cars from the Verizon IndyCar Series, the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, the high-flying trucks of the SPEED Energy Stadium SUPER Trucks and the Trans Am Series presented by Pirelli.
The Grand Prix event will be held Friday, June 2 through Sunday, June 4 at the Raceway at Belle Isle Park. Ticket prices vary so see the official website for details.

The Ancestors Tour at Elmwood Cemetery | Saturday, June 3 | $20 adults, $15 children (ages 9-12) | Elmwood Cemetery in Detroit, MI
Elmwood Cemetery is considered the most important historic burial ground in Detroit. Join Black Scroll Network History & Tours’ Educator and Historian, Jamon Jordan for a tour of the many great African American ancestors of Detroit. You will learn on this 2-hour tour about the contributions of the great ancestors of Detroit and their deeds.
Sights scheduled for viewing are the Royal Tomb of Martha Jean “The Queen” Steinberg, the sarcophagus of Mayor Coleman Young, the Campau Family burial plots, and the Michigan 102nd Colored Regiment.

Wonder Woman Day | Saturday, June 3 | FREE | Vault of Midnight – Detroit
The new Wonder Woman movie premieres on Friday, June 2nd and everyone is excited about it! Vault of Midnight, the comic book store located in Downtown Detriot, is hosting their very own “Wonder Woman Day” in celebration of the new movie. On a personal note, my 17-year-old son loves Wonder Woman! She is one of his favorite superheroes.
Wonder Woman Day will feature free giveaways, a costume contest, and a special discount for everyone who attends the Wonder Woman movie. Make sure you bring your movie ticket stub to show proof you went to see the movie!

If you love farmers markets as much as we do, then you’re going to want to add the Oakland Avenue Farmers Market to your list to visit! Saturday, June 3rd is the opening day for Oakland Avenue Farmers Market in North End, Detroit. The day will include a plan and clothing swap with Halima Cassells, a food demo with Dr. Sushi at 1 p.m., live music, free workshops, and a special giveaway.
Bring flowers, plants, seeds, and supplies for the plant swap. If participating in the clothing swap, bring old clothes. (We’re looking forward to attending the opening day because my husband and I are BIG lovers of farmers markets!)

Freedom House Community Appreciation Celebration | Saturday, June 3 | FREE | 2630 W. Lafayette Blvd., Detroit
Freedom House is hosting an event to show the community their appreciation for helping keep their doors open during a funding crisis. Guests can expect live music from the MSU Jazz Improv, refreshments from Avalon International Breads and Sister Pie, a guided tour of the Freedom House, and family-friendly yard games.
Freedom House will also be collecting voluntary donations for the Southwest Detroit Immigrant and Refugee Center. Free parking is available in the surface lot at Howard Street and 18th Street or on the street.

Corktown Neighborhood Tour | Sunday, June 4 | $15 | 2068 Michigan Ave., Detroit
This rain or shine event will be held in Corktown, Detroit. Come and see what’s new in Detroit’s oldest neighborhood at the Corktown Neighborhood Tour! Guests can expect to see historic homes, lofts, and buildings which were constructed during the 1840s to the early 1900s. Well-known Corktown landmarks such as the Holy Trinity and ST. Peter’s Churches will also be featured on the tour.
