Hey, Detroit friends! I have some exciting news for all of you fashion lovers. Rachel Lutz and The Platform jointly announced on Tuesday, May 30, 2017, Yama, a new women’s retail store, will open this Fall in the Fisher Building!
“We are honored to have a local retailer who has enjoyed such incredible success join the Fisher family,” said Dietrich Knoer, co-principal of The Platform. “We love that Rachel will create a vibrant retail space, helping to re-establish New Center as a destination for shopping in the city.”
Rachel Lutz is the owner of The Peacock Room– a women’s clothing store which features vintage classics. She also owns the retail store Frida, which is another women’s retail store for today’s woman. Yama dedicated to the contemporary woman
The new Yama is a women’s retail store dedicated to the contemporary woman. It is named in honor of legendary Detroit architect Minoru Yamasaki. Yamasaki was the king of mid-century modern design, and Yama’s apparel will showcase architecturally-inspired, edgy fashion and accessories for the modern woman.
“There has been such an overwhelming response to The Peacock Room that we’ve outgrown our footprint after doubling the original space,” Lutz said. “I’m now doubling that into New Center, a neighborhood that will be growing leaps and bounds over the next few years.”
The new retail store will be located on the first floor of the historic Fisher Building in the New Center District. It will offer sizes 00 to 26 at all price points. Lutz believes in serving every woman, not just a narrowly defined type.

“As we work to bring new office tenants and residents to New Center, we want to bring the neighborhood more first-class shopping options. Rachel’s ability to use her sense of style, innovative targeted marketing and one-of-a-kind merchandise are perfect for the Fisher Building’s rebirth as a go-to place for retail,” said Peter Cummings, co-principal of The Platform.
New Center Seeing Tremendous Growth
According to a release, New Center is seeing tremendous growth, with the addition of the QLINE, construction under way on The Platform’s 231-unit Third and Grand development, as well as the planned conversion of the Albert Kahn Building into residential.
“As we work to bring new office tenants and residents to New Center, we want to bring the neighborhood more first-class shopping options. Rachel’s ability to use her sense of style, innovative targeted marketing and one-of-a-kind merchandise are perfect for the Fisher Building’s rebirth as a go-to place for retail,” said Peter Cummings, co-principal of The Platform, which has launched a major renovation and overhaul of the National Historic Landmark.
It will be exciting to see how the QLINE, Detroit’s new streetcar, will have a positive impact on business and economic growth in the city. With the QLINE now in service, many customers will have an opportunity to discover the new Yama store, especially for visitors who are new to Downtown Detroit.
