Looking for a Halloween costume that doesn’t cost a lot of money? My husband created a DIY Bob Ross Halloween costume, and it was super easy and quick to do! We spent around $21 total on this fun costume idea. Read today’s blog post to learn how you can create your own Bob Ross costume!

For Halloween, Travis is dressing up as Bob Ross. It’s such a fun and easy costume idea, especially for people with beards.
But even if you don’t have a beard, you can easily get one at a Halloween store or retailers like Target or Walmart. (I’ve seen fake beards at Meijer and Target.)
Travis dressed up as Bob Ross a few years ago when we went to the Michigan Science Museum for a Halloween-themed date night. (I was Diana Ross lol. )
To save money (and time!), we thought it’d be a good idea for him to be Bob Ross again. Plus, he still held onto his curly wig, and it was in great condition.
DON’T’ WASTE YOUR MONEY ON BUYING A BOB ROSS COSTUME SET!
I’ve seen Bob Ross costumes for sale at places like Amazon and Spirit Halloween ranging between $17 – $50. Listen– don’t waste your money on all of that! Lol!
This DIY Bob Ross Halloween costume idea is SO easy to recreate on your own. Here’s how we did it.
WHAT YOU NEED FOR A DIY BOB ROSS HALLOWEEN COSTUME
- A light blue, long sleeve men’s shirt (I thrifted Travis’ shirt at The Salvation Army for about $6.)
- Curly wig – You can buy wigs at a Halloween store or find great deals at your local beauty store. I bought my clown wig at a beauty store in my neighborhood for $10 because it was on sale!
- Cardboard piece – Travis used a pizza box to create a large-sized paint palette for his costume.
- Craft paint – We already had paint at home, so Travis used our craft paint to create the paint splotches onto the diy cardboard paint palette.
- Regular wall paint brush – This was something we already had at home, too.
- Blue jeans – Travis already has a pair of jeans, so he didn’t need to buy a pair.
See what I mean? It’s THAT easy!
So, total I think we spent between $18 – $20. But remember, we bought his curly hair wig in 2019, so this year we only spent $6 for the thrifted shirt.
And if you already have super curly hair or a fro, then you don’t even need to worry about getting a wig.
HAPPY LITTLE TREES: REMEBERING FOND MEMORIES OF THE LATE BOB ROSS
We have three more Halloween events we’re going to– two this weekend and then trick or treating on Halloween day. I must admit, I’m a little jealous of how easy and quick it is for Travis to put together his Halloween costume.
He’s done in less than 15 minutes!
So far, Travis has dressed up as Bob Ross at Marble Bar’s Kids’ Halloween Party and last weekend. It’s been a crowd favorite! People get a kick out of seeing his costume. Some will come up to him and say, “Happy little trees!”
I think the majority of people have very fond memories of watching Bob Ross paint his beautiful nature artwork on the PBS show The Joy of Painting.
I remember as a kid I used to love watching Bob Ross paint, and I’d try to paint my own “happy little trees” while watching the show. Haha!
And I will always remember Bob’s gentle, calming voice. It brought me joy to watch Bob paint and share his wisdom.
It’s very clear that Travis’ Bob Ross costume makes a lot of people smile! If you decide to dress up as Bob, I hope your costume also brings your family and friends some joy, too.
