Patterson Dog & Cat Hospital Celebration
July 20 @ 12:00 pm - 4:00 pm EDTFree
Patterson Dog and Cat Hospital on Grand River Avenue in Woodbridge turns 175 years old this year. It is the oldest continuously-operated small business in Detroit and the oldest veterinary hospital in the country. The first Dr. Patterson to operate in Detroit came from England and started his practice in 1844 serving the city’s draft horses. The Henry Ford Museum still has one of the practice’s pre-automotive horse ambulances, circa 1900.
The Patterson family practice was an integral part of the city’s transportation history; as Detroiters transitioned from horses to cars, the practice gradually began seeing more pets and renovated its current building in 1913 to accommodate dog kennels rather than horse stables. The history of Patterson tells much of the city’s story, from small-town farming and shipping community, through its rise as a world-class city and all through its toughest years. It is registered as part of the National Historic District of Woodbridge.
Dr. Glynes Graham bought the practice in 1985, having worked there since she was 15. Doctor Graham has seen her share of Detroit through the doors on Grand River. “The technology has certainly changed a lot over the years, but one thing stays the same: people love their pets. We’re proud of our standard of care,” she said. “It’s an honor to be such a part of the city’s history, but we’re also just as honored by all of the people who have trusted us with their pet’s care over the years.”
To celebrate, the veterinary hospital is planning a block party on July 20. Tours of the facilities, including the historic second story, will take place all day. A historical marker will be unveiled at 1:00. Food trucks and music are planned for the event, as well as a petting zoo and a brief presentation of the history of the business. The Detroit Police Mounted and K-9 units will also be on site. Said Graham, “Our neighbors have been the key to our success through all these years in Detroit, and we want to make sure they’re a big part of our celebration.” The event is free to attend.
