Walk to Cure Arthritis
May 19 @ 11:00 am - 1:00 pm EDT
Hundreds of walkers are supporting the Arthritis Foundation’s mission to cure arthritis and help people with arthritis live a full life by participating in the Detroit 2019 Walk to Cure Arthritis on Sunday, May 19th at Jimmy John’s Field in Utica. The Walk to Cure Arthritis brings together communities nationwide to fight arthritis – the nation’s leading cause of disability – which impacts 2.3 million in Michigan. This year, walk participants can stay for the baseball game at Jimmy John’s and receive a complimentary lunch of ballpark cuisine.
In the Detroit area, to help bring this event to its fullest potential, we brought together local people to help energize the community and raise funds for the cause, including:
- Matthew Adams, MD, DMC, Walk to Cure Arthritis medical honoree
Brandon Bell, Walk to Cure Arthritis adult honoree, Allen Park, MI
Koehn Long, Walk to Cure Arthritis youth honoree, Owosso, MI
Brandon has suffered from Psoriatic Arthritis since he was 8 years old. He has long been involved with the Arthritis Foundation in a variety of capacities. He attended Camp Dakota (a summer camp for kids with arthritis), and later became a counselor at that same camp. Now that he is an adult, he is trying to navigate his career options. He loves to work with his hands, but his disease may limit his options.
Koehn is a typical 9-year-old boy, who loves playing sports. However, since being diagnosed with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis and Juvenile Ankylosing Spondylitis, he has a difficult time keeping up. While medications help reduce his inflammation, the side effects include a depressed immune system, leading him to catch many colds.
When you support Walk to Cure Arthritis, you become a Champion of Yes, helping us build a lifetime of better options, while accelerating the search for a cure. Whether you are close to the disease or simply looking for an inspiring charity event that truly makes a difference, Walk to Cure Arthritis provides people the opportunity to experience the power of standing together and giving back to the community. Together, Detroit can Walk to Cure Arthritis and help us reach our goal of raising more than $100,000 to help find a cure for this disease.
In the U.S., more than 50 million adults and 300,000 children live with arthritis. Costing the U.S. economy $156 billion dollars a year. Arthritis affects one in five Americans and causes more activity limitation than heart disease, cancer or diabetes.
Nationally sponsored by Amgen, locals can register for the Detroit Walk to Cure Arthritis and learn more about the event by visiting walktocurearthritis.org/detroit or contacting Bill Wenzell at 248-469-4406.
