How was your week? This week has been pretty busy with us getting ready for Christmas. I can’t believe it’s next week! Have you finished your holiday shopping yet? If you’re still looking for last-minute gift ideas, here’s my “Favorite Detroit Things List” that I shared last night. It features sixteen Detroit small businesses I shopped at in 2020.
Don’t forget– the Eastern Market Holiday Market is this coming Sunday, 12/20 and then the last Holiday Market day is Tuesday, 12/22!
Hope you have a good weekend! xoxo
Here are four Detroit things I discovered this week:
DECKED OUT DETROIT
Have you heard the news? Bedrock recently announced its latest winter shopping experience called “Decked Out Detroit.” In partnership with the Rocket Community Fund, Decked Out Detroit is a four-month plan to support businesses and the community.
Starting today, downtown restaurants will feature heated open-air pergolas for safe outdoor dining, and downtown parking will be complimentary at Bedrock lots and garages with validation. All “Decked Out Detroit” activations have been designed in collaboration with the City of Detroit Health Department to ensure compliance with all the latest COVID-19 health and safety regulations.
KWANZAA AT THE WRIGHT GOES VIRTUAL THIS YEAR
Habari Gani? Kwanzaa is in eight days! Are you planning a special celebration with your family? We celebrate Kwanzaa and have a few things planned for the kids this year. If you’re looking to celebrate Kwanzaa, then check out the Kwanzaa events happening at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History (The Wright)!
From December 26, 2020, to January 1, 2021, The Wright will stream songs and dances, storytelling, poetry reading, and more to mark the occasion of Kwanzaa. Each night at 7 pm EST, guests can log on to thewright.org to view a new presentation delivered by The Wright and one of its six partners: the African Liberation Day Committee, Malcolm X Grassroots Movement, Nsoroma Institute, UNIA & ACL, Nanou Diapo, and Hood Research.

ROSEVILLE’S FIVE STAR CAKE CO. FEATURED IN PLUGRA® BUTTER’S HOLIDAY RECIPE SCRAPBOOK
Starlett Simmons, owner and head pastry chef at Five Star Cake Co. in Roseville, Michigan, was featured in Plugrá® Butter’s Holiday Recipe Scrapbook. The Plugrá® Butter brand is a slow-churned Premium Butter made with fresh milk from American dairy farms. Simmons was one of three chefs selected to bring back family recipes so consumers can #BakeNotBuy through their holiday list with recipes, tips and tricks for yummier treats.
Always loving baking, Simmons decided to leave an unfulfilling job in the finance industry and wanted to do something that made her and others happy. As a staple in the African American community and a tradition in her family, Simmons is bringing back Peach Cobbler. “Using Plugrá® butter in the recipe makes it so much more amazing. You can taste the butterfat – I’m telling you,” she said.
Plugrá® is carried at major markets and specialty food store locations throughout the U.S. and is available in 8oz salted and unsalted solids and sticks for everyday use. For store locations, visit plugra.com/productlocator.
GENERATOR Z, A NEW GRANTMAKING INITIATIVE THAT CENTERS TEEN INSIGHT TO REIMAGINE AFTERSCHOOL
Beginning January 25, 2021, grants totaling $3 million will be available to not-for-profit organizations based in Southeast Michigan and Western New York. It’s a project designed to reimagine the afterschool experience.
Generator Z is a grantmaking initiative driven by teens: an ideas lab for teens and organizations to come together, and reimagine afterschool in a changing world. Teens lead the conversation on the future of afterschool by sharing their story and their vision, while organizations look to this insight for inspiration. Teens have a stake in designing the future they want.
Generator Z flips the script of traditional grantmaking by centering teen voices as the drivers of innovation. Generator Z values young people for their critical insight, invites organizations to experiment with new ideas, and prioritizes accountability to young people.
