“Laughter is good like a medicine,” said Detroit comedian Tirrell McCoy. I was chatting with him about his latest production “Roland on the Floor Laughing with Good Medicine Entertainment” (also called ROFL W/GME) at Noah’s Event Venue in Southfield, Michigan. Tirrell invited Travis and me to attend the comedy dinner theater night on October 21st.

Tirrell McCoy hosted “Roland on the Floor Laughing with Good Medicine Entertainment”– a comedy dinner theater evening at Noah’s Events Venue.

Founder of Good Medicine Entertainment (GME), Tirrell McCoy is a comedian, director, and playwright. He has been doing standup comedy for about 14 years now. Similar to actor and comedian Will Smith, Tirrell’s comedy acts promise good laughter minus the cussing and vulgar language.

“You don’t have to use vulgar language to be funny,” Tirrell told me. “I’m very grateful and I’m very thankful for the opportunity to do what I do and I don’t have to compromise myself to do it.”

Tirrell also believes laughter is important in the church because “it’s good medicine” for church members and it helps keep the pastors encouraged. “The pastors are dying from depression,” he said, “and they’re taking their own life because they don’t have the joy that we’re trying to spread.”

According to the National Alliance on Mental Health, 1 in 5 U.S. adults experiences mental illness each year. Pastors are not exempt from this, either. Many pastors struggle with anxiety, depression, and other mental health illnesses.

In an L.A. Times article, Ed Stetzer from the Billy Graham Center shared his thoughts on pastors who are struggling with depression. Stetzer was quoted as saying some pastors “hide their own mental illness because they fear their congregations won’t listen to someone who is struggling.”

This hits close to home for me because just a couple of months ago, I had received a letter in the mail from my old home church in Tennessee. The letter was a general announcement to the congregation. The pastor revealed he had been struggling with severe depression and needed to step down to take care of his mental health.

GOOD MEDICINE ENTERTAINMENT’S INSPIRATIONAL COMEDY

Tirrell McCoy’s Good Medicine Entertainment company strives to create feel-good content that not only entertains but also brings joy and laughter to everyone. GME is one of the top Christian entertainment companies in Metro Detroit.

The company has a 7-year history in ministry and its mission is “to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ to all mankind by providing quality Christian entertainment through laughter and fine arts.”

About twice a year, Tirrell and his team at Good Medicine Entertainment put on a special production. Tirrell told me the shows are usually held in May and December, but this year they decided to do a new event for the fall season. GME is even considering creating a special production for Valentine’s Day 2020!

HIGHLIGHTS OF ROFL W/GME

We had a great time at ROFL W/GME! The event held true to its name because we were definitely rollin’ laughing throughout the night. My cheeks were hurting by the end of the night from laughing so much.

1. HILARIOUS IMPROV SKITS

Improv actors Deborah Lane Spencer, Jezar Riches, Car Los, and Mr. Mello performed in the comedy skits. The synopsis of the interactive skits were about two best friends who were on separate dates. Based on differing dating scenarios, the audience was invited to decide what the main characters should do next.

Think of Choose Your Own Adventure books (Hello 90s babies!), only the audience used their smartphones to vote on what the actors should choose.

Utilizing the app Poll Everywhere, we are able to place our votes by sending a text to the app. The results were then displayed on a projector for everyone to see.

Tirrell’s “Reverend Doctor Deacon Cleodis” character had me rollin’, too! It reminded me so much of Martin Lawerence’s skits on his 90s hit show Martin. Remember Roscoe and Otis from the show.

And who can forget Sheneneh? LOL!

Martin Lawerence’s “Sheneneh Jenkins” character was my favorite! I remember watching the show when I was a teen on Thursday nights, just waiting to see if Sheneneh would make an appearance in the episode.

Tirrell also found creative inspiration in Martin Lawerence’s comedic character creations. After watching Martin Lawerence’s film Blue Streak, he was inspired to create the fictitious character “Reverend Doctor Deacon Cleodis” for his comedy skits.

2. SMOOTH JAZZ SOUNDS BY DARYL BEEBE

Detroit saxophonist Daryl Beebe

Comedy wasn’t the only highlight of the evening, though. Another entertainment highlight at ROFL W/GME was the smooth sounds of Detroit jazz artist Daryl Beebe.

The talented saxophonist played two upbeat jazz songs. The audience was clapping their hands and snapping their fingers as they grooved to the music.

3. DELICIOUS 3-COURSE MEAL BY CHEF DUANE ROLAND

The food by Chef Duane Roland was delicious!

Detroit Chef Duane Roland created a delicious three-course meal for the evening. For dinner, Travis and I enjoyed the baked chicken, macaroni and cheese, and mashed potatoes.

For dessert, we had warm, apple cider and a cinnamon doughnut courtesy of Yates Cider Mill (one of our favorite cider mills in Metro Detroit).
