Happy Women’s History Month! In today’s blog post, freelance writer Jai Marie celebrates our first woman vice president– Kamala Harris! Jai shares her thoughts on why Madam Vice President Kamala Harris’s new role in the White House will have a great, positive impact on young girls and women.

For the first time in history, the United States celebrates Kamala Harris– the first woman vice president, as well as the first African-American and Asian-American vice president. It has truly been astonishing to watch Kamala gracefully accept her new role as vice president. I think she is paving the way for women and girls across the world– more specifically for women of color. We finally get to see someone who looks like us in a position of power.

March is Women’s History Month and it’s a time to celebrate women’s contributions to history, culture, and society. As the first woman of color vice president, Kamala has certainly made history and will leave an impact for generations to come.

During her election acceptance speech, MVP Harris said, “While I may be the first woman in this office, I will not be the last, because every little girl watching tonight sees that this is a country of possibilities.” Kamala becoming vice president wasn’t the start of her breaking barriers, though. In 2010, she was elected as the first Black woman to serve as California’s Attorney General.

I feel like Women’s History Month is the perfect time to commemorate Harris and all of her accomplishments. For years, women have fought for rights and equality. We’ve climbed through obstacles and tore down walls to claim what is rightfully ours. Women of color, in particular, are still faced with challenges, but there are trailblazing women like Kamala Harris showing us that we too can make a difference.

We should honor women each day for continuing to lead, even through barriers placed in front of us. Celebrating the accomplishments of women and girls around the world is important because we’ve laid down on our backs and allowed others to walk all over us for many years.

The time has come where women are truly changing the world. Having a month dedicated to honoring women, shows us the strength and endurance we have. It shows us that women continue to reach milestones regardless of what tries to stand in our way.

“While I may be the first woman in this office, I will not be the last, because every little girl watching tonight sees that this is a country of possibilities.”

MVP KAMALA HARRIS IS PAVING THE WAY FOR WOMEN

On March 8th, International Women’s Day, Kamala addressed the European Parliament. In her speech, she voiced her thoughts on how the world does not yet work for women and how women deserve an equal voice.

She went on to say, “And this is not just an act of goodwill. This is a show of strength. If we build a world that works for women, our nations will all be safer, stronger, and more prosperous.”

Every woman should have a voice, and living in a world that ensures we do, creates empowerment and guarantees we get the rights we deserve. Change can only happen if we speak up. MVP Harris is making it a point to speak up for herself and other women and girls, as well. She is making an impact and creating meaningful change.

I feel it’s important for women to come together, to lean on one another, and lift each other up when we face adversity. We are strong and powerful in our own way. Women from diverse backgrounds have contributed so much to society. We deserve to be celebrated today and every day for our gifts which we have chosen to share with the world.

If Kamala Harris can make it to the White House and push through roadblocks, then every girl on this earth can make a difference. My hope is that we continue to strive for excellence and persevere through anything that comes our way.

I hope that Kamla continues to speak and stand up for women and that during her time as vice president, she reaches new heights and accomplishes many things for us. Having a woman as vice president is certainly a win for us all.

For this Women’s History Month, there is much to celebrate and be grateful for. We as women will continue on the path of greatness. We’ll continue to succeed in whatever we choose to do. We’ll continue to fight for equal opportunities.

As of today, we have more rights than we’ve ever had, but the struggle is still prevalent. It is difficult for me to imagine living during times where women weren’t allowed to do half the things we can today. Kamala has certainly made those who came before us proud.
