My introduction to the great work of Dr. Maya Angelou was when I was a teenager. I had checked out her autobiography I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings from my school library because I wanted to know more about Maya Angelou.

I had been reading a few works by African American writers such as Ernest Gaines and Zora Neale Hurston at the time. I added Maya Angelou to my reading list, but at the time, I don’t think I fully understood she was one of the greats in literature.

I remember reading I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings and not being able to put the book down. I finished reading it in a couple of days and I couldn’t wait to read another piece of literature by Dr. Angelou. I was hooked! I was even more amazed when I discovered her poetry. Inspired!

Now today, many people quote Maya Angelou offering inspiration and wisdom in personal writings, social media, and other ways. Even Oprah called Maya Angelou her mentor!

“Maya Angelou is not what she has done or written or spoken; it’s how she did it all. She moved through the world with unshakable calm, confidence, and a fiery, fierce grace and abounding love.”
