Last Friday, I took Zhen to work with me for a couple of hours. She had a dentist appointment and the appointment turned out to only be about an hour long, so I thought it’d be fun to grab lunch to-go and stop by the office.

Zhen always asks me what I do when I work at the office. (I work remotely three days a week in the summer.) This was a perfect opportunity for her to see some of the work I do!

It’s kind of a tradition for us to get lunch from a local restaurant after a dentist appointment. We usually get lunch from a local coney island because Zhen’s favorite food to get is a cheeseburger and milkshake.

However, I told her no milkshakes this time. “I’m trying to cut back on our sugar intake, so we don’t get more cavities!” She wasn’t too happy about that!

“Also, it’s probably not cool getting a shake after a dentist appointment anyway, Zhen.”

“I knoooow! But it’s my favorite,” she said.

“Okay, how bout we get sandwiches and take it to my job to eat lunch there?”

She loved that idea, and I knew the perfect place for us to visit located not too far from where I work.

Mudgie's Deli and Wine Shop in Corktown, Detroit
We ended up grabbing sandwiches at Mudgie’s in Corktown. Made it just in time before they closed up for the day.
Zhen wanted to swing on the swings at the playground across the street from the deli while we waited for our lunch order.

Detroit lunch idea: Mudgie's Deli and Wine Shop

What we had for lunch: Zhen got a turkey grilled cheese, and I got the Brooklyn, my favorite sandwich at Mudgie’s. I always save half of my sandwich for later, just to savor the experience. It’s that good.

Mudgie's Deli and Wine Shop serves delicious sandwiches. This one is called Brooklyn.

Friends have told me Mudgie’s also serves delicious breakfast sandwiches and is a Detroit hot spot for brunch.

I’ve been meaning to visit for Saturday brunch. Maybe sometime soon for a day-date with Travis!

After we left the office, I said to Zhen, “See. Now you know a little of what I do on my office days.”

She said, “Yeah, you sit in front of the computer and do nothing.” Haha! (Even as I type this, I’m cracking up laughing because it was so funny!)

“What?! (laughing) No I don’t! I work on the computer, Zhen! Some of my work is done on the computer.”

Kids say the most honest and funniest things. Smh!
