We finally had the opportunity to visit the Crossing Night: Regional Identities x Global Context art exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (MOCAD).

The Crossing Night art exhibit opened on October 25, 2019, and the last day will be on February 2, 2020. It’s a must-see if you haven’t had a chance to view it yet.

Crossing Night: Regional Identities x Global Context presents work that addresses the concerns, thoughts, and desires of contemporary artists from the Southern African region as they grapple with the legacy of post-colonial structures. Regional Identities x Global Context is the second iteration of Crossing Night, an exhibition series organized by the A4 Arts Foundation—a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting the creative arts in southern Africa. With an emphasis on transition and transformation, Crossing Night explores how local politics, urban landscape, and place shape the personal identities that define regional culture. The exhibition will feature photography, video, sculpture, and installation works.”

FAVORITE ART COLLECTION

My favorite art collection at the Crossing Night art exhibit was by South African artist Lebohang Kganye from her series “Ke Lefa Laka” (2013). The series features four photographs of Kganye’s late mother and Kganye wearing her the same outfit her mother wore in each original photograph.

In the photographs, Kganye digitally superimposed, or placed her image on top of the original photograph. Without knowing the full context of the artist’s relationship with her late mother, my interpretation of Kganye’s photographs were she loved her mother very much. I thought Kganye’s art series was a beautiful way to honor her mother and also a very powerful message of love.
