CHEERING ON THE DYC AT THE DETROIT YOUTH CHOIR COMMUNITY WATCH PARTY

Travis and I took the kids to the Detroit Youth Choir’s official watch party in Detroit. Hosted by the parents of the DYC, the celebration was held at the Northwest Activities Center in Detroit. (The NWAC is located on the northwest side of Detroit at 18100 Meyers Road.)

We wanted to cheer on the DYC so we thought it would be fun to attend the watch party instead of watching from home. I’m glad we were able to attend the watch party and connect make a few connections.

“THEY GOTTA WIN! THIS IS GOD’S WORK.”

Community leader and mentor Eric Melton, for instance, attended the DYC’s watch party to show his support for the youth.

“It’s always a pleasure when our young children are doing something that they love and enjoy and take it to the next level,” Mr. Melton said to me. “They gotta win! This is God’s work!”

FUN ACTIVITIES AT THE DYC WATCH PARTY

While we waited for the final performance to air, everyone mingled in the banquet hall. Media outlets WDIV-TV (ClickOnDetroit), R&B and Old School radio station KISS 105.9, and Throwback Hip Hop and R&B station 105.1 The Bounce were also at the watch party.

KIDS FAVORITE ACTIVITY AT THE PARTY: THE PHOTO BOOTH!

The kids were obsessed with the photo booth, though! They loved sorting through the masks and putting them on their head.

Zechariah and Zephaniah tried to sneak off with the Ironman mask a few times. Lol! They’re always putting on their superhero costumes at home so they were excited to see a big box of fun masks.

Of course, Travis would choose a creepy mask. LOL!

We’re going to put our photo booth strips in a frame to hang at our house. I also liked the text overlay that printed onto the pictures. It had an AGT icon and the hashtag #VOTEDYC4AGT printed on the photos.

It served as a reminder for us to share our photos with our friends and the nation on social media. Plus, it’s going to make for a great memento for a memory box or scrapbook for the kids.

WATCHING THE DYC’S FINAL PERFORMANCE ON AGT

Once it was time to watch the DYC’s final performance, everyone packed up their things and headed across the hall to the auditorium. The Detroit Youth Choir’s performance was AMAZING! They were on fire!

The DYC sang “Can’t Hold Us” by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, the same song they sang that won them the Golden Buzzer.

WHAT THE JUDGES THOUGHT OF THE DYC’S PERFORMANCE

ALL of the judges LOVED the DYC’s performance! Gabrielle Union, Simon Cowell, Howie Mandel, and Julianne Hough even gave the DYC a standing ovation after their beautiful performance.

Remember when actor and AGT host Terry Crews gave the DYC the Golden Buzzer and sent them straight to the finals? Terry is also a Flint native and felt a strong connection to the Detroit Youth Choir.

“Every young man and woman on this stage represents me and where I came from. I remember sitting at my window in Flint, Michigan dreaming and wanting to make it and wanting to be here. And they’re here. And they did so well that I have to do this.”

On the DYC’s moving performance, actress Gabrielle Union said the Detroit Youth Choir “represented all excellence that are in so many people that get overlooked and cast to the side and what can happen when you recognize that you are excellent from birth!” ‘

At this, family and friends burst out into cheers and started clapping, agreeing with Gabrielle’s remarks.

I spotted comedian Tirrell McCoy at the watch party and I asked him how he thought the DYC did. Here’s what Tirrell had to say:

“I think the performance was absolutely outstanding!” Tirrell exclaimed. “Anthony White is a friend of mine, and to see him progress so much– to go from here to L.A.– I remember when he told me he was going to audition for [AGT],  I was excited then, but I’ll be honest with you– I had no idea he was going to get this far. I thought it would be great publicity for him. I thought, ‘Aw man that’s going to set you right,’ (laughs) but I had no idea he was going to go this far! But they are more than well-deserving. A million dollars could go a long way for young people in this city.”

ANXIOUSLY WAITING TO SEE IF THE DETROIT YOUTH CHOIR WINS AGT

On the DYC’s performance, Kyana Smith said she loved the performance. Her son Ryan Bowens is a member of the DYC and he performed last night with his team.

“I loved it!” Ms. Smith told me.

“He told me they had to put something together in one week so shout out to Mr. Anthony, the choreographers, the whole team, the behind-the-scene workers that a lot of people don’t know about. I could just see all of that come to fruition. It just brings tears to my eyes.”

Voting is now closed. Set a reminder so you don’t forget to WATCH THE AGT RESULTS TONIGHT ON NBC! The show starts at 8 P.M. EST.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE DETROIT YOUTH CHOIR!
