Hi, friends! In today’s post, I am sharing 10 DIY Halloween makeup ideas to help you with your Halloween costume planning! These Halloween makeup looks are perfect for if you need a last-minute costume idea or if you just want a simple Halloween face painting. A HALLOWEEN FACE PAINTING MAKES A PERFECT LAST-MINUTE HALLOWEEN COSTUME IDEA!
YOU: ARE YOU A MAKEUP ARTIST, TOO?
NO. Haha! So let me just drop this disclaimer before we continue:
I am not a makeup artist. However, I do know a thing or two about makeup. Mainly, because I watch a lot of makeup videos on YouTube and I used to work in an industry that required a lot of beauty skills (that’s a post for another time).

PINTEREST IS THE BEST PLACE TO FIND DIY HALLOWEEN MAKEUP IDEAS
I found my Halloween makeup inspiration on Pinterest for a few of the Halloween makeup looks. I looked at a few pictures for ideas and then I free-handed the makeup styles. I wanted to share a few of the DIY Halloween makeup ideas my kids and I came up with because it was a lot of fun creating them.
YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE A PROFESSIONAL MAKEUP ARTIST TO CREATE A FUN, HALLOWEEN MAKEUP LOOK. 🙂
JUST HAVE FUN WITH IT! My Halloween makeup skills may look a little amateurish. I know that and I am at peace with it. Lol! The point of this round-up is to show you if I can do it, then you can do it, too!
At the end of the day, your kids are gonna love you for it and think you’re pretty cool. (My kids did, anyway. They also giggled a few times and that’s okay, too! Lol!)

USE YOUR MAKEUP PRODUCTS WITH HALLOWEEN MAKEUP
Many of the makeup products we used I already owned because it’s my personal makeup that I use daily. I used beauty sponges and makeup brushes to apply the makeup, including the Halloween face creams. The makeup brushes make applying makeup so much easier. I also bought Halloween makeup at Spirit Halloween so we could change up our Halloween costume looks.
We are going to attend more than one Halloween event this month and I thought adding a Halloween face painting would be a fun way to refresh a new/old costume. For instance, if you buy a lion costume for your child, you may want to create a lion face painting instead of using a face mask.
Another good reason Halloween face paintings will make a great costume is you can create a new costume. You can use clothing you already own or buy something at the thrift store to save money. Then create a Halloween makeup look to go along with your outfit just like I did with my tiger Halloween makeup.

DIY HALLOWEEN MAKEUP IDEAS
BLACK PANTHER-INSPIRED MAKEUP IDEA
For Michala’s Black Panther-inspired makeup look I put on Michala’s makeup just as she normally would– primer, foundation, concealer, eyeshadow, mascara, and lip gloss.
Then I used the e.l.f. “18 Hit Wonder” eyeshadow palette to create her shimmery eye-look. After that, I used the white Spirit Halloween face cream to create the dots and line on her mouth.
MAKEUP DETAILS:
- Bare Minerals foundation
- MAC concealer
- e.l.f. black liquid eyeliner
- e.l.f. “18 Hit Wonder” eyeshadow palette
- Spirit Halloween white cream face makeup
POP ART MAKEUP LOOK
I accidentally stumbled upon this pop art Halloween makeup look. I was searching for Halloween makeup ideas on for women and I noticed there were a lot of different pop art-themed makeup ideas. I decided to give it a try. Michala said she likes it.
Again, I’m no makeup artist, but I think it turned it out pretty well for my first time! 🙂
MAKEUP DETAILS:
- Spirit Halloween black and red cream face makeup
- white eyeliner pencil
- Revlon Ultra Matte HD lipgloss (red)
- blue eyeshadow (for the tears)
TIGER MAKEUP LOOK
This tiger makeup look was a last-minute decision. We were getting ready for a trunk or treat event and I wanted to do a Halloween face painting for myself. I was originally going to do a deer makeup look, but when I saw my Tigers baseball tee, I decided to be a tiger instead.
MAKEUP DETAILS
- Spirit Halloween orange cream face makeup
- Spirit Halloween black cream face makeup
- Spirit Halloween white face makeup
- e.l.f. black eyeliner
- e.l.f. “18 Hit Wonder” eyeshadow palette
- Revlon Ultra Matte HD lip gloss
CUTE DEER MAKEUP IDEA
The key to creating a deer makeup look is to contour the nose and cheeks. This is what is going to give you the defined deer nose illusion. I also added brown eyeshadow to her forehead and cheeks to give a blended look with the two different shades of brown.
CONTOURING IS KEY FOR THE DEER FACE PAINTING!
MAKEUP DETAILS:
- Bare Minerals foundation
- e.l.f. “18 Hit Wonder” eyeshadow palette
- e.l.f. black eyeliner
- Spirit Halloween black and white cream face paint
- Wet & Wild glitter eyeshadow
SHIMMERY UNICORN MAKEUP IDEA
What I love about the unicorn makeup idea is you can use ANY color of your choice to create this look. You don’t have to necessarily use the pink and purple colors I used. A unicorn makeup look would also look great with other fun colors like pastel blue, pastel green, glittery silver, and shimmery gold.
I blended my Milani “Stellar Lights” highlighter with blue eyeshadow on Michala’s cheeks. Then I blended the highlighter on her nose. You could also use silver or white eyeshadow in place of a highlighter. I chose to use the “Stellar Lights” highlighter because it has a shimmery look.
Michala also already had a unicorn hoodie (with a horn on top) so she wore it for this unicorn makeup look! I think it turned out cute.
MAKEUP DETAILS:
- Bare Minerals foundation
- MAC concealer
- e.l.f. black liquid eyeliner
- L’Oreal Voluminous mascara
- Milani “Stellar Lights” highlighter
- “Birthday Cake” eyeshadow palette
- Wet & Wild silver glitter shadow
- NYX “Powder Puff Lippie” (purple)
- Spirit Halloween face gems
COLORFUL CHEETAH MAKEUP IDEA
For this look, I first put on my Milani face primer, MAC foundation, and MAC concealer. I used my “Birthday Cake” eyeshadow palette and my Milani “Stellar Lights” highlighter palette for the spots. Then for the mouth, I used Spirit Halloween’s black and white cream makeup.
I think I may have made my cheetah spots a little too big. Lol! But other than that, I think the makeup look turned out alright. Michala said she liked it and Zhen loved the bright colors I chose. What do you think?
MAKEUP DETAILS:
- Milani face primer
- MAC Foundation
- MAC concealer
- Milani “Stellar Lights” highlighter palette
- “Birthday Cake” eyeshadow palette
- Spirit Halloween black and white cream face makeup
GREEN DINOSAUR, POSSIBLY A TRICERATOPS
So here’s the thing– I wasn’t prepared to make a dinosaur face painting. Zhen just out of the blue said she wanted to be a dinosaur. A TRICERATOPS to be exact. So I looked up dino face painting ideas on Pinterest and this is what I came up with. Haha!
I texted my mom a photo of Zhen’s triceratops look and my mom texted back, “Oh, Zhen you scared me!” And I thought, to myself, “Oh, dang! What if Zhen looks more like a creepy troll and NOT a dinosaur?” LOL!
So heyyyy! It’s a dinosaur. It’s possibly a triceratops. Or it’s a creepy troll that scares grandmothers through text messaging. You decide! 🙂 Lol!
MAKEUP DETAILS:
- Spirit Halloween black, green, and white cream face makeup
- Spirit Halloween face gems
- silver eyeshadow
- NYX “Powder Puff Lippe” (purple)
SPIDER-MAN FACE PAINTING IDEA
Zephaniah wanted to join in on the fun so he asked for a Spider-man face painting. It can be challenging doing face paintings for toddlers because they don’t have a lot of patience to sit still for a long time.
Click HERE to jump to my section on tips to keep your little ones still while doing a face painting.
For Zephaniah’s Halloween face painting, I mainly used Spirit Halloween’s black, red, and white face cream. I used my eyeliner pencil to lightly sketch the lines on his face. Then I went over it with the black cream face paint. I added just a little bit of white face paint to give it a web effect.
TODDLER MAKEUP TIP: Since Zephaniah is little, I thought it would be best to not put face paint on his eyes.
10 TIPS TO FACE PAINT YOUR SQUIRMY BABE
- PUT COSTUME ON FIRST. Help your child put on her Halloween costume FIRST. This way she won’t get makeup on the costume or smear the makeup.
- CLEAN CHILD’S SKIN. Clean your child’s skin with a gentle soap first before putting on the makeup.
- LET YOUR CHILD HOLD A MIRROR. Place a small mirror beside your little one so he can see his makeup look. Zhen and Zephaniah loved it when I had a mirror in front of them so they could see their transformation!
- USE YOUR TABLET. Let your little one watch a favorite show on your tablet or phone.
- PUT ON A FUN MOVIE. Put a movie on and position your child where he can see the television.
- ASK FOR A SUPPORT PERSON. Have a second person help you when your little one gets squirmy. When I had to draw the lines on Zephaniah’s face, Travis gently held Zephaniah’s head still.
- HAVE YOUR CHILD EAT BEFORE THE PAINTING. Don’t let your child eat food while you put the makeup on because she may get food crumbs on the makeup.
- TAKE SHORT BREAKS. If your little one is too antsy, then just do a little makeup at a time. Try giving your child short breaks to play or run around.
- PAINT THE MOUTH AREA LAST. Save the mouth area for last in case your child needs to eat.
- PATIENCE. Patience. Patience! Our little ones don’t understand yet about sitting still for long periods of time. Designate a reasonable time to do the face painting and be patient with your little one. 🙂
HOW TO USE THE SPIRIT HALLOWEEN CREAM FACE MAKEUP:
WHAT IF I MAKE A MISTAKE WHEN PAINTING THE HALLOWEEN FACE PAINTING?
MAKEUP TIP: If you make a mistake, use a gentle makeup wipe to dab at the area. You can also use coconut oil on a cotton ball or a Q-tip to dab at the area. This way you don’t have to wipe off all of the makeup and start all over!
- Apply the face cream with a beauty blender or makeup sponge.
- DO NOT wet your beauty blender. The face cream didn’t stay on well when I used a damp beauty sponge. (I usually add a few drops of water to my beauty blender when applying my foundation.)
- Use a LIGHT amount applying a thin layer of face cream. Then gently pat the skin area where you want the face cream.
- Reapply face cream (thin layers only) until you have the desired look.
The Spirit Halloween face creams go a long way. I actually bought too many tubes. I only needed one tube per color for 4 people! So if you are doing Halloween face paintings for 4 people, you will only need one face cream tube per color.
If you made it to the end of this post, thank you for reading and following our journey. I hope today’s Halloween makeup ideas post can help you with your Halloween costume planning! xoxo
